Pandora, created by the gods of Olympus, received a gift of a jar (often wrongly called a box). Zeus forbade her to open it, but driven by curiosity, she lifted the lid. All misfortunes – illness, old age, suffering – escaped to spread among men. At the bottom of the jar, however, remained hope, the last comfort for humanity.
